Deep venous thrombosis

When a blood clot forms in a vein in the leg, the normal flow of blood to the heart is interrupted. A thrombosis causes pain and requires immediate treatment

The most common location where a venous thrombus forms is in the deep veins of the legs. The symptoms are normally pain and swelling of the affected leg.

This is called deep vein thrombosis ( DVT) because it affects the deep, but not the superficial veins of the limbs. Thrombosis may also be found in the veins in the arms or in some of the internal organs

Three weeks ago I was admitted to the hospital because of DVT and I have already recovered. However, I still have heaviness in my affected leg. Is this normal?

La trombosis no mata. Suele producir dolor e hinchazón de la pierna, pero no más. Ahora bien, el coágulo (trombo) que se ha formado puede romperse. Y si lo hace, una parte se puede desenganchar de la vena en cuyo interior se formó y entonces irá a parar al pulmón. Y una embolia pulmonar sí que puede matar. De hecho, es una causa importante de muerte. Mata tanto como un infarto de miocardio o un ictus. Por ello es importante detectarlo y tratarlo a tiempo.

My husband wants to take off the elastic bandage of the leg where he had a thrombosis because he feels that it is more swollen with the stocking now. Is it OK if he takes it off or should he keep it on for as long he was told?

Por lo que explica no puede ser un trombo. Por lo menos no un trombo venoso. Nunca afectan a los dedos del pie. Como norma afectan a la pierna, a veces a la pierna y también al pie. Pero no solamente a un dedo del pie. Podría ser una trombosis arterial, pero solo en el caso de que sea usted diabética o una gran fumadora. Y desde algún tiempo antes (meses), usted sentiría dolor en la pantorrilla al caminar (lo que llamamos claudicación intermitente). Otras posibles causas de dolor e inflamación en un dedo del pie: una crisis de gota o un traumatismo.
