Thrombosis frecuency

It is difficult to count the exact number of cases of thrombosis in Spain. What we do know is that it affects men and women almost equally.

It is not easy to know the frequency of DVT in Spain. Advances in anticoagulant treatment have provided information stating that these patients have increasingly more control in their home, without the need to be admitted to hospital. So from 2010 there are no accurate statistics.

But thanks to the Registro Informatizado sobre la Enfermedad TromboEmbólica (RIETE), a large database at the service of professionals in operation since 2001, we can have an approximate figure of the incidence of thrombosis in Spain (and in 23 other countries).

According to this registry, which currently has (anonymised) information on more than 70,000 VTE patients, 50,827 are Spanish. Of these, half suffered a thrombosis. And if we look at who is most affected, the data reveal that in Spain thrombosis is a disease suffered almost equally by men and women.

As it is a disease that sometimes goes undiagnosed, because the symptoms are mild, or because it is confused with other causes of swelling and pain in the legs, we may think that its frequency is higher.
