DVT symptoms are caused by the interruption of the normal blood flow in veins that transport blood back to the heart.
A progressive accumulation of blood in a limb, usually in the leg, can cause the following signs and symptoms:
-
- pain and swelling in the affected limb. The arm or leg, full of poorly circulating blood, swells, aches, and the superficial veins become visible. The pain in the leg increases when standing or walking
- increased temperature of the skin, which can also appear red and shiny. The patient might have fever, which rarely exceeds 38ºC
Due to the effect of gravity, these signs and symptoms may worsen within hours if the person is standing or sitting, while the swelling may decrease in a lying position as the veins become emptier.
DVT does not always present with symptoms and it goes untreated, as the patient does not notice it and, therefore, does not seek medical attention.
In other cases, especially in patients who are immobilized or do little physical exercise, the symptoms are similar to the discomfort produced by a blow to the leg or after stretching sharply..
What does a leg with a thrombosis look like?
The thrombosed leg is swollen, reddish and warm (especially the foot).
