Pulmonary embolism frequency

Frequency of pulmonary embolism is lower than the one of myocardium infarction or cerebral ischemia, but much more deadly

.

In Spain there is one case of PE for every three cases of myocardial infarction or cerebral ischemia. The average age of patients with pulmonary embolism is 70 years old and is equal in men or women. 35% are hypertensive people, 20% suffer from some form of cancer, and 15% have diabetes.

According to data provided by the Ministry of Health, 22.250 cases of pulmonary embolism were diagnosed in Spain in 2010. Of these, 8.9% of patients died while in hospital.

Although not all die of PE, of course.

One in every three patients suffering from pulmonary embolism developed it in hospital, while admitted for other health issues.
