Long-term sequelae of pulmonary embolism

Main sequelae of pulmonary embolism is difficulty to breath or pulmonary arterial hypertension

The emboli reaching the lung are progressively disappearing and healing due to the effect of anticoagulant drugs (or blood thinners). In about half of the patients, the clot ends up dissolving completely, but in the rest, it persists in the form of scars, which often do not show symptoms.

Three of every 100 patients with a PE will always suffer from a difficulty to breathe. It is what we call pulmonary blood hypertension, caused by having emboli inside the arteries of the lungs. It is a progressive and serious disease.

If you have had a pulmonary embolism and months later, you still have difficulty to breathe, like it never happened before you were diagnosed with PE, please go to your doctor, since diagnosis of this sign is relatively simple.
